American Society of Dermatologic Surgery Recognizes Local Physician for Her Work in Patient Safety Issues

WALNUT CREEK, CA, Jan. 7 – M. Christine Lee, M.D. has been selected to receive the 2008 President’s Award by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery for significant contributions to the specialty of dermatology. The recognition is in appreciation to Dr. Lee for her efforts to increase public awareness concerning patient safety issues. Dr. Lee has been a tireless advocate for patient safety in the state of California. Having treated countless patients for complications they suffered at the hands of untrained non-physicians performing laser procedures in unlicensed clinics, Dr. Lee not only assisted those patients with their medical injuries, but also helped with their filing of complaints with state regulatory agencies. When those complaints went uninvestigated, Dr. Lee remained vigilant in pressing for follow-up, to ensure that more patients were not unnecessarily harmed. Dr. Lee devoted time away from her practice and family to offer compelling testimony at numerous Medical Board of California hearings. Always emphasizing the need for stronger regulations and for enforcement of existing regulation, Dr. Lee testified at legislative hearings on behalf of the injured victims. Dr. Lee’s efforts to improve the safety for patients in California and her success at shining a spotlight on issues surrounding the non-physician and non-supervised practice of medicine justly earned her the recognition from her peers. The ASDS is proud to award Dr. Lee the 2008 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery President’s Award.

Min-Wei Christine Lee, M.D., M.P.H. is Board-certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and further sub-specialized by completing a distinguished fellowship in Laser Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Mohs Micrographic Surgery/Skin Cancer/Facial Plastic Reconstruction, and Advanced Dermatologic Surgery from University of California, San Francisco. She is the Director of The East Bay Laser & Skin Care Center in Walnut Creek, CA. Dr. Lee remains academically involved as Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Dermatologic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, by teaching residents and medical students, conducting research, and writing papers. She has authored numerous scientific articles and papers on laser surgery, cosmetic surgery, skin cancer, and dermatologic surgery. She is also the author of the book “The Ultimate Guide for the Best Skin Ever: Lasers”.
